Coinbase Commerce Lists Dogecoin, Potential Reach 8,000 New Merchants

Coinbase Commerce, a cryptocurrency payment processor, recently added the top meme coin Dogecoin (DOGE) to its supported altcoins list. Online sellers including Shopify users can now accept DOGE payments.

DOGE accessible to more merchants

Coinbase Commerce’s new addition of Dogecoin means that crypto holders will be able to spend DOGE at merchants that use the Coinbase Commerce plugin.

Dogecoin’s co-creator Billy Markus commented on the addition:

“This is a big deal. It’s integrated with Shopify meaning any vendor using Shopify can relatively easily accept DOGE with it.”

Shopify alternative WooCommerce also supports the plugin.

Dogecoin is the 7th crypto coin supported by Coinbase Commerce. The six that were accepted before are Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Litecoin (LTC), Dai (DAI), and USD Coin (USDC).

Coinbase added DOGE to its main exchange listings last month on June 3, which likely paved the path of acceptance to Coinbase Commerce.

What’s Coinbase’s merchant reach?

Coinbase Commerce is one of the most popular cryptocurrency payment processors globally. It competes with payment processors such as BitPay, CoinGate, and CoinPayments.

Before Coinbase Commerce news, already approximately 1,400 merchants accepting DOGE. Notable stores that accept the coin include Mark Cuban’s Dallas Mavericks store and the computer hardware retailer Newegg.

According to Coinbase more than 8,000 merchants use Coinbase Commerce, meaning that today’s news could significantly increase the number of merchants that accept the coin.
