The Polkadot (DOT) blockchain network is designed around an ecosystem of interconnected, application-specific subchains called Parachains. Polkadot was built and conceived by Dr. Gavin Wood, one of the co-founders of Ethereum (ETH) and the inventor of the Solidity smart contract language.
The network facilitates cross-chain communication and interoperability by connecting multiple blockchains into one unified network. The project’s Lightpaper explains that the network aims to offer advantages of scalability, upgradeability, transparent governance, and cross-chain composability over other projects.
