eBay Shows Digital Wallet During An Investor Presentation

Leading ecommerce marketplace eBay showed a “digital wallet” slide early in its Investor Day presentation on Thursday, fueling the gossip company’s plans for crypto.

EBay has toyed with the idea of adding crypto payments for some time, most recently couple weeks ago when CEO Jamie Iannone said that the company is studying the potential for accepting cryptocurrency as it aims to be the go-to marketplace for Gen Z and millennials.

The ecommerce giant has supported the sale of non-fungible tokens (NFT) on its platform for a while now.

However, the latest investor presentation, other than saying that the digital wallet will be ready for use in the second quarter, there was nothing particular from the company regarding crypto payments.

Digital wallets are software programs that hold payment information. Some are mainly meant for credit and debit cards. Instead of pulling out a (physical) wallet, you can pay by tapping your phone at the point of sale.

However, digital wallets can also store private keys that would enable people to pay in BTC or other cryptocurrencies. And recently, many prominent crypto wallets have expanded their functionality to more easily let people view and trade their NFTs—unique tokens that act as digital deeds of ownership to other assets.

Iannone said that eBay is “continuing to look at new forms of payment to add now that we’ve got the rollout of global payments complete.”
