London Bus Contactless Payment Celebrates Decade With TfL

Over 2.5 billion tap-and-go transactions have been completed on city buses operated by Transport for London throughout the past ten years.

TfL started expanding outside its exclusive Oyster card system in December 2012 to enable users to pay for their trips with a touch of their bank card or mobile phone.

2061 users of contactless bank cards took 2586 bus trips on the first day of service. Pay as you go contactless is now used for around 1.7 million daily travels.

Approximately 100,000 contactless taps per week are made on bus route 149 from London Bridge to Edmonton, which is the most popular bus route for the payment method. Contactless payment cards or mobile devices are used for approximately 70% of all pay as you go bus trips.

“This system has helped to continue to make bus journeys easier and more convenient for millions of Londoners and visitors to our city,” says Seb Dance, deputy mayor for transportation.
