A New EU Taskforce Is Looking Into ChatGPT’s Privacy Issues

The European Data Protection Board (EDPB), which is Europe’s national privacy watchdog, has put together a ChatGPT committee to set privacy rules for the AI platform.

The news comes after Italy put a temporary stop to ChatGPT because of privacy and security worries. After the announcement, Germany’s data security commissioner said in a statement that they could do the same. On Thursday, the Spanish Data Protection Authority (AEPD) said that they would look into the AI tool’s privacy problems. One MP filed five ChatGPT complaints with the French regulator, Commission Nationale de l’Informatique et des Libertés (CNIL).

Since its start in late 2022, more than 100 million people use ChatGPT every month around the globe. Like any AI technology, the AI chatbot became popular for quickly answering queries on a variety of topics. The tool makes governments worried about privacy, safety, and job security.

The EDPB made the following statement:

“The EDPB members discussed the recent enforcement action undertaken by the Italian data protection authority against OpenAI about the ChatGPT service. The EDPB decided to launch a dedicated task force to foster cooperation and to exchange information on possible enforcement actions conducted by data protection authorities.”

The move by the EDPB is a step towards making privacy rules for artificial intelligence (AI) stronger.

Klarna uses ChatGPT for shopping recommendations, whereas JP Morgan bans it for workers.
