Figure AI has officially unveiled its latest creation, the Figure 02 humanoid robot. This second-generation model represents a significant advancement over its predecessor, Figure 01, with numerous enhancements to improve functionality and user experience.
Sleeker Design and Enhanced Capabilities
The Figure 02 robot features a sleeker, more modern design than the Figure 01. The new model boasts a matte black finish, replacing the chrome metal of its forerunner. This update gives the robot a more refined appearance, akin to a contemporary sports car. “Figure 02 is the highest performing humanoid robot we’ve developed so far,” said a company spokesperson, reflecting the advancements in hardware and software.
The new robot incorporates significant design changes, such as fully integrated wiring and improved joint mechanics. The cables, previously routed externally in Figure 01 for easy adjustments, are now internalised in Figure 02, enhancing durability and aesthetic appeal. “We’ve moved from a prototyping phase to a production-ready model,” noted Michael Rose, Director of Robot Controls at Figure AI.
Performance-wise, Figure 02 offers notable upgrades. Its battery capacity has been increased by 50%, extending the robot’s operational time from 5 hours to a more robust runtime. The new model is also equipped with six onboard RGB cameras and a vision language model, which enhances its ability to perceive and interact with its environment. The robot’s hands, featuring 16 degrees of freedom, can now carry up to 25 kilograms, an improvement from the 20-kilogram capacity of Figure 01.
Vadim Chernyak, Director of Hardware at Figure AI, highlighted the enhancements in Figure 02’s hands and joints. “The new motors and actuators provide better performance and durability, ensuring the robot can handle a range of tasks with human-like dexterity,” he said.
Collaborations and Testing
Figure AI has also strengthened its partnerships, notably with OpenAI and BMW. The collaboration with OpenAI allows Figure 02 to utilise advanced conversational AI, enabling more natural interactions. In industrial settings, Figure 02 was tested at BMW’s Spartanburg plant, which involved data collection and use case training. “Our robot is now capable of performing basic tasks autonomously in a real-world industrial environment,” stated Brett Adcock, Founder and CEO of Figure AI.
