CryptoPunk Sells For Record-Breaking 8,000 ETH Worth $23.7 Million

CryptoPunk #5822 was sold for a record-breaking 8,000 ETH worth close to $24 million, making it the highest priced NFT in history.

CryptoPunk #5822 was purchased by Chain CEO Deepak Thapliyal for 8,000 ETH ($23,701,160.16), breaking the previous record held by DraftKings’ largest shareholder Shalom Meckenzie who purchased CryptoPunk #7523 for $11.8 million back in June 2021.

Developed in 2017 by Larva Labs, CryptoPunks are a collection of 10,000 algorithmically generated 24*24, 8-bit-style tokenized and pixelated art images.

The huge popularity of the NFT industry last year saw a numerous CryptoPunks transactions worth millions of dollars. The collection consists of different designs, such as humans, aliens, apes, zombies, and others.

Deepak Thapliyal’s purchase of the CryptoPunk #5288 set the new record for the highest amount paid for a CryptoPunk. He posted on Twitter that he had acquired CryptoPunk #5822 for 8,000 ETH (worth about $23.7 million).

Thapliyal later on explained that he was able to use leverage through CompoundFinance to purchase the digital art.

CryptoPunk #5288 is the rarest avatar kind of CryptoPunks – an alien – as there’re only nine such NFTs out of the 10,000.

CryptoPunks have attracted big names outside of the crypto industry as well. Last august, the multinational financial service giant Visa bought one for $166,000.
