California Governor Gavin Newsom recently signed a bill prohibiting schools from adopting policies requiring parental notification if a student changes their gender identity. The legislation aims to protect students’ privacy and safeguard the critical role of parents, as noted by a spokesperson for the governor: “The law keeps children safe while protecting the critical role of parents.” However, this perspective is not universally shared.
LGBTQ advocates argue that students have the right to privacy, while others insist parents should be informed about significant changes in their children’s lives. Brandon Richards, an advocate, emphasised the importance of the child-parent relationship, stating that the law prevents politicians and school staff from “inappropriately intervening in family matters and attempting to control if, when, and how families have deeply personal conversations.”
Musk’s Perspective

The relocation of these headquarters is expected to impact thousands of employees. SpaceX employs over 5,000 people in California, and Musk’s mandate for employees to work in the office means many will face significant changes. Governor Newsom’s reaction was more critical. He highlighted Musk’s recent endorsement of Donald Trump by posting a 2022 screenshot of Trump predicting Musk would “drop to [his] knees and beg” if asked. This move comes amidst reports that Musk is financially supporting Trump’s presidential campaign. The Wall Street Journal noted that Musk might be directing $45 million a month toward Trump’s campaign, a claim Musk ambiguously responded to on social media.
Musk’s decision to relocate the headquarters follows a pattern. In 2021, Tesla’s headquarters moved from Palo Alto, California, to Austin, Texas. Musk benefits from the state’s lack of personal income tax as a Texas resident. Moreover, earlier this year, he moved SpaceX’s incorporation from Delaware to Texas after a Delaware judge invalidated his $56 billion pay package from Tesla, which shareholders later upheld.
