G7 Officials Are Interested In The Rules About AI

On May 30, leaders from the G7 countries will meet in Japan to talk about the problems that tools like ChatGPT face.

This meeting comes after the same group agreed to create an intergovernmental platform called the “Hiroshima AI process” to talk about the growing use of AI tools. The G7 said the following in a united statement after this meeting:

“ We recognise the need to immediately take stock of the opportunities and challenges of generative AI, which is increasingly prominent across countries and sectors.”

Takeaki Matsumoto, Japan’s communications minister, said that next week’s G7 meeting will be the first time that working-level G7 officials will meet to talk about AI. They will talk about things like protecting intellectual property, spreading false information, and how the technology should be controlled.

The moves made by the G7 are part of a larger attempt to regulate AI. The EU Parliament has also made important changes to its AI Act. In the most latest step of the European AI Act, MEPs voted for AI models like ChatGPT to have more transparency.

Matsumoto said that Japan, as this year’s G7 chair, “will lead the G7 discussion on responsive use of the generative AI technology.”

By the end of 2023, the G7 AI working group will have worked with the OECD and the Global Partnership on AI (GPAI) to make suggestions for heads of state.
