MoonPay Acquires Zombie CryptoPunk For 900 ETH Worth Over $3 Million
A fintech payment infrastructure provider, MoonPay acquired a zombie-themed CryptoPunk worth over $3 million.
MoonPay often acts as a middleman for celebrity NFT purchases, which begs the question who is the high-profile figure is behind the buy.
According to OpenSea, January 6 at 11:52pm UTC, MoonPay bbought the NFT for 900 ETH. With ETH worth $3,406.48 at the time, the USD value of the purchase is $3,065,832.
After the purchase, MoonPay tweeted prompting their followers to guess who the purchase was for. Fan predictions ranged from NBA players to Gordon Ramsey.
CryptoPunk #2681 NFT is one of 88 available ‘zombie’ punks, making it especially valuable to collectors. The punk’s last major sale of the NFT was from maxand98 for 277 ETH, valued at $542,219.19 at the time.
Back in November, the host of ‘The Tonight Show,’ Jimmy Fallon said on air that he had purchased a Bored Ape NFT through MoonPay. Post Malone did a similar thing the same month.
Eminem also purchased a Bored Ape for over $400k beginning of this year. The popular NFT collection has generated over $1 billion in total sales on OpenSea.
NFTs are not only becoming a popular cultural icon among such artists, but also a tool for generating revenue. For example, Nas plans to sell the ownership rights for two of his songs through NFTs, from which he and other owners will profit from their use.
