Netherlands Gets Contactless Public Transportation Payments

The Netherlands is the first country in the world to start a national system for paying for public transport without touching a card reader.

Travellers in the country can now use their bank card, credit card, or digital wallet to tap in and tap out of all public transportation, such as trains, buses, metros, and trams.

With the OVpay open loop system, made by Translink, public transport companies and Mastercard worked together to help local banks put in place rules for processing mobility transactions.

The local manager for Mastercard in the Netherlands, Jan-Willem van der Schoot, says:

“From now on, no need to separately buy tickets or miss your train because the balance on your public transport card is too low.”
