Sweden’s BankID Starts Making Digital ID Cards

Swedish digital identity service provider BankID, which is owned by a bank, is putting out a digital ID card.

The card is stored in the BankID app, but it works the same way as a real card. It will have a photo, name, personal identification number, and age of the holder, as well as a QR code that businesses can scan to verify the credentials.

It won’t replace traditional IDs for things like travel and dealing with the government, but you can use it to prove your age when buying alcohol and pick up packages at the post office.

BankID is owned by seven banks, and more than eight million Swedes and more than 6,000 companies and organizations use it to identify themselves and sign documents.
