Binance Helps The Royal Thai Police with Crypto Crime Crackdown

In a world increasingly dominated by digital currencies and blockchain technology, the rise of cybercrime has become an alarming concern. Cryptocurrency exchange Binance has taken a pivotal role in the fight against crypto-related scams, particularly in Thailand, where criminal networks have been exploiting digital assets to defraud unsuspecting victims. Binance’s collaboration with the Royal Thai Police has led to dismantling of these criminal networks, resulting in arrests, substantial asset seizures, and a beacon of hope for victims.

Operation Trust No One: A Triumph of Collaboration

Binance’s Investigations team, driven by its commitment to user security and regulatory compliance, has actively supported law enforcement agencies worldwide. In a notable case known as “Operation Trust No One,” Binance partnered with the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) of the Royal Thai Police and U.S. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). The objective: to dismantle a criminal ring behind a significant crypto scam that had affected thousands of victims.

The scam, called “pig butchering,” preyed on novice investors by cultivating trust and enticing them to invest in fraudulent platforms. Once lured in, scammers would display fictitious profits and deceive victims into paying additional fees, ultimately making off with their investments.

Thanks to intelligence provided by Binance and HSI, the CCIB arrested five principal members of the criminal group and confiscated assets valued at around THB 10 billion ($277M), including luxury cars, homes, land, and other upscale items. This operation was a significant success, with over 3,200 victims seeking compensation, emphasising the importance of timely information exchange in combating cybercrime.

Unravelling Transnational Criminal Networks

Binance’s involvement in Thailand’s fight against cybercrime didn’t stop there. In another operation, Binance was pivotal in dismantling a vast transnational criminal network that orchestrated a large-scale crypto scam. This operation involved suspects spread across 30 sites in various provinces, requiring the coordination of over 200 officers from the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB).

Once again, Binance’s crucial intelligence and investigator support were instrumental in securing arrests and confiscating illicit assets. These assets included 16 luxury residences, 12 top-tier vehicles, and THB 16M ($440,000) in cash. The CIB recognised Binance’s contribution by awarding a commemorative plaque to the Binance investigators.

Establishing New Standards for User Security

Binance’s commitment to user security and regulatory compliance is a testament to its ongoing efforts to combat cybercrime and bolster the safety of the Web3 ecosystem. Their Head of Financial Crime Compliance, Tigran Gambaryan, highlighted the importance of such partnerships, stating, “Our team-up with Thai law enforcement champions our mutual commitment to the protection of users and the advancement of cybersecurity.”

Binance has invested significantly in building its compliance talent, processes, and technology, resulting in an industry-leading global compliance and investigations team. This team consists of professionals with backgrounds in regulation, senior investigators from esteemed blockchain analysis firms, and experienced law enforcement agents.

Over the last three years, Binance has fulfilled and assisted in over 103,000 law enforcement requests with an average response time of three days—faster than most traditional financial institutions. These actions demonstrate Binance’s dedication to restoring trust in the digital-asset ecosystem and its resolve to combat cybercrime globally.

In conclusion, Binance’s collaboration with the Royal Thai Police is a beacon of hope in the fight against crypto-related scams. Their unwavering commitment to user security, regulatory compliance, and cooperation with law enforcement agencies worldwide sets new standards in combating cybercrime and advancing cybersecurity in the digital age. As they continue to partner with authorities across the globe, Binance’s role in protecting users and the digital-asset ecosystem remains vital.
