Europe’s Top 6 E-Commerce Markets Represent 72% Of Online Spend

Europe’s six largest e-commerce markets contributed 72% of the overall e-commerce spending in 2022.

The United Kingdom and the Netherlands, the two European e-commerce markets with the highest penetration rates, have continued their pre-pandemic growth. Emerging markets like Spain and Italy resume to grow quicker.

These data come from the E-commerce in the Post-Pandemic Era report by CBRE. The research looked at e-commerce in Europe before and after the corona pandemic.

These facts are taken from CBRE’s report, “E-commerce in the Post-Pandemic Era.” The study analyzed how European e-commerce was managed before and after the corona pandemic.

E-commerce marketplaces in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands create the most online spending on the mainland (72 percent). These six markets are very different from one another. The biggest markets are the UK and Germany, accounting for 28 percent of all European e-commerce spending in 2022. The other four markets account for a quarter of the expenditure.

Designed e-commerce markets grew slightly

When examining the markets and the pandemic’s effects, developed markets have experienced small rises. E-commerce penetration in this study was defined as the ratio of a market’s total retail sales that appear online rather than in stores. By the end of 2022, the UK’s e-commerce penetration would have earned 25% if the growth rotation from 2015 to 2019 had continued. Yet, the actual percentage is 27%.

According to the pre-pandemic movement, the German e-commerce market was launched to have a penetration rate of 15 percent by the judgment of 2022. However, the exact figure reached 17 percent, overreaching the expected growth. Contrarily, the Netherlands’ market reverted to its pre-pandemic trend and experienced no additional development due to the global health concern.

Online usage has grown in emerging markets

The highest relative growths were observed in nations with developing e-commerce industries. The pre-pandemic trend predicted a 9 percent penetration rate for Spanish e-commerce. The exact percentage was 12 percent. These percentages were 8 and 10% for Italy.

By the end of 2022, the penetration rates in Spain and Italy will be 5.2 and 3.9 years ahead of the pre-pandemic standard. Together, these markets make up 11% of all European e-commerce expenses.
